There are non-traumatic conditions affecting adult patients handled by orthopaedic surgeons. Examples of which are infections of bones and joints, tumors, metabolic problems, limb deformities noted since birth, or acquired from injuries and arthritis. Arthritis is a condition often affecting the elderly and presents with pain and eventually loss of function due to erosion of the cartilage lining of the joint. The early stages of arthritis are managed with pain killers, activity modification, and physical therapy. In worst cases, when the joint is damaged beyond salvage, the deranged joint is completely changed using metal, plastic, or ceramics. This is total joint replacement.
